A Dark and Stormy Knight

Our first adventure began aboard a ship. A terrible storm arose and drove the ship onto the rocks. Of the survivors, a group of 4 sought shelter under cliffs.

Argyle - Half-Elf Ranger
Llama - Human Cleric
Mawgrim - Half-Orc Barbarian
Alistair - Elven Wizard

On top of the cliff stood a tower, and our group of adventurers found an entrance hidden at the base of the cliff. The large door was unlocked, and opened easily. Our band sought shelter from the storm inside. After lighting a torch, they found themselves inside what was once a grand room. They could tell that in times past this room was used for entertaining, but today, only dust gathers. There were three massive stone doors, one in the center of each wall.

Our group searched the room and examined the doors diligently, but these doors would not budge. Suddenly a ferocious thunderclap shook the room, and all three doors fell open. As the adventurers approached one of the now open doors, they could hear squeaking noises getting nearer. A pack of rats came swarming into the room. In their panick, they attacked the nearest targets they saw. Three of the rats managed to bite an adventurer, but they were then quickly dispatched. The rest of the rats fled.

After regathering their composure and examining their wounds, our intrepid quartet began searching down the now opened corridors. They searched to the East and discovered a room at the end of a short corridor with a chest sitting in the middle. Each man examined the chest, but no one dared open it. Perhaps they would come back fo it later.

They returned to the main room and crossed over to the door opposite. This led to another short corridor which ended in a room much like the one they had just left. In the corner of this room stood a sarcophagus. Our team cautiously approached, but were amazed to see the eyes open. Suddenly, a pair of bat-like wings extended and the head flew toward them. The Lesser Vargouille let out a piercing shriek which caused two of our adventurers to be paralyzed with fear. The Ranger, however, was not afraid. He let loose an arrow that struck the beast between the eyes and brought it down. The Ranger looked inside the mummy case and found a ring.

After the Cleric and Wizard recovered, the team returned to the main room and ventured through the final door and into a longer corridor. This corridor continued for 150 feet before openning up to another chamber. There were a few tables in this room and the rain fell into the middle of the room from a shaft in the roof. There was a rope hanging down from the openning. In the floor they noticed a drain, where the rain water escaped; but they also noticed darker stains, which indicated other fluids had been drained here. As the Ranger was looking up at the rope wondering what might be at the top, two Hobgoblin Raiders entered the room from the opposite side and charged our men. The combat which ensued was costly to the team, for even though they manged to kill the Raiders, the Ranger suffered a significant wound leaving him unconscious and bleeding to death on the floor. The Cleric was able to stop the bleeding, and with a Cure Light Wounds spell, further damage was stopped; but the Ranger would remain unconscious for some time. Searching the creatures, Mawgrim found and removed from one of the Raiders a Belt of Bulls Strength. He put it on and immediately he could sense a growing strength within.

Our band of merry adventurers then went down the hall from whence the Hobgoblins had come. After about 50 feet, they found another small hallway to the East, which they followed. As they were nearing the end of this hallway, the Cleric walked into a spiders web, which he had not seen. A Monstrous Spider descended from the ceiling and first attacked the Wizard. The Wizard was able to inflict minor damage on the spider, but then the spider bit paralyzed him and he fell to the floor. The Cleric continued to struggle with the web, trying to slice it, only to get his weapon stuck. The spider moved on to the next target, the Barbarian. A massive struggle ensued. The Barbarian inflicted significant damage, but he too finally succumbed to the spider's bite. What would happen now? Our only remaining adventurer is stuck in the web. Finally, after several attempts, the Cleric is able to use his torch and burn the web, setting himself free - and just in time. The spider attacked, but missed. The cleric however did not and finished off the spider with a massive blow from his warhammer.

As the Cleric gathered his wits, he began looking about the room and saw hundreds of mummified corpses of rats. Occasionally, he noticed larger humanoid shapes encased in the spider's webbing. He found various rusted weapons, but also managed to discover a small sack containing 75 gold pieces. Meanwhile, the others slowly recovered from their bites. The spider had not injected enough poison to kill them, only temporarily paralyze them. It had planned on finishing off the cleric and then returning to drain the fluids from them all.

The group decided to rest awhile and regain their strength some, before moving on. When they did move, it was back out the narrow passageway to the main corridor. Again they continued North and entered a large chamber with a long stone table. On the table is a large corpse dressed in the manner of a Knight. Scattered around the floor, were specks of gold glinting amongst the dust. As our brave group began to pick up the gold pices the Knight sat up, with a morningstar in one hand and a javelin in the other. He let out a haunting, eerie moan and then threw his javelin at Mawgrim. Mawgrim was able to easily side-step the javelin. Alistair let loose a magic missile, which injured the Dark Knight. Lllama realized that this was a zombie and immediately cried out to his god for power to turn the undead. Fortunately, he was successful; and the others were able to finish off what turned out to be a bugbear zombie. If Lllama had failed, I fear that would have been the end of our group.

After catching our breaths again, we searched the room and recovered over 250 pieces of gold. Mawgrim also discovered that even though the Knight's morningstar and javelin had rusted, he had a masterwork Battle Axe, which Mawgrim took for himself.

Our group then returned to the room where they had left the Ranger, and found him to be still unconscious. They decided to spend the night in this room, taking turns on watch, while the others slept. In the morning, the rain had stopped and Argyle had regained his consciousness. Llama was able to perform another Cure Light Wounds on him. The group, though battered, were not beaten. With the weather clearing, they left the Tor and returned to the beach, where they would set off on their next adventure.

Welcome

Hello. This is my first post at the new Piedmont Crusaders. This site will serve as a recap of adventures taken by our gaming group, based in Anderson, SC. We are focusing on the Castles & Crusades ruleset for fantasy role playing. These are terrific rules for quick and easy gaming.

As I have time, I will post the results of our recent past adventures and I will attempt to update the results of each gaming session before the next scheduled game.

I will also post links to some of my favourite places on the web relating to C&C and RPG.

And as I become more proficient at this, hopefully this site will really come to life with pictures, artwork in addition to the recaps.

Let me know what you think.
